Thane, Maharashtra, India. Jan 30

A woman in Thane district’s Bhiwandi city has said that her husband has given triple talaq to her on Rs. 100 stamp paper.

The woman, Shabnam, said on Monday that she was caught unawares when she received the divorce papers on Rs. 100 stamp paper. “My husband used to beat me because he used to demand dowry and I was not able to give it to him,” she said. The police have filed a case against five people in this matter.

In August, 2017, Supreme Court of India had struck down the practice of triple talaq. It was a direct result of petitions filed against the practice by Muslim women.

The lower house of the parliament in India called Loksabha, in December, 2017, passed a bill that made instant triple talaq a criminal offence, with a jail term of up to three years. This was done amidst protest from many Muslim women and other political parties.

The incidents of triple talaq in the country are now being viewed under the context of the triple talaq bill that requires passing in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament. This is expected to happen in Budget session, 2018 which is currently going on in India.
