Stone Pelting on School Bus in Kashmir’s Shopian District, Children Hospitalised

Some miscreants pelted stones at a school bus and injured two students yesterday in Shopian district of Kashmir. The attack on the bus happened around 9:30 am at Zavoora village. The bus was taking students of Rainbow International School located at Deegam, Batpora. The miscreants were sitting on a hilltop and stoned at the bus which caused injuries to two students. Both of the students got head injuries and were admitted in district hospital, Shopian.

Rehan Ahmad Gorsi, an eight-year-old student was later admitted to Sher-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura (SKIMS) for further treatment. Rehan had to undergo a CT – scan which said that the child has a Hematola, said a doctor at SKIMS.

The police registered a case and have started investigation to nab the culprits. All political parties based in Kashmir, separatist leaders, Human right Activists and Bar Association of Kashmir condemned the act and demanded that miscreants be dealt with according to law.

Director General of Police SP Vaid said in a tweet that pelting stones on school bus showed complete madness. He said that these miscreants would be taken to task. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the act and tweeted, ‘Shocked & angered to hear of the attack on a school bus in Shopian. The perpetrators of this senseless & cowardly act will be brought to justice’.

Omar Abdullah, Former Chief Minister condemned the act and tweeted, ‘How does pelting stones on school children or tourist buses help advance the agenda of these stone pelters? These attacks deserve our unequivocal condemnation & this tweet is mine.”

Senior Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani also expressed his dismay over stone-throwing incident at Shopian. In a statement, Geelani said that our strength lay in discipline and it was our duty to keep strict vigil over those involved in these incidents. He further stated that in resistance we needed to demonstrate our mature thinking and follow discipline.

Moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also termed this act as hooliganism. In a statement, he said, ‘The stone-throwing incident in Shopian on a school bus is quite disturbing and one fails to understand why a school bus carrying children was targeted’.

On the same day, a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by security forces in village of the same district, which turned into a gun fight later on. However, as soon as the news of gun fight spread, youth of adjacent villages took to streets and contravened with the security forces to disrupt the anti-militant operation. The forces fired bullets, pellets and tear gas shells into the protesters, resulting in death of a youth Umar Kumar of Pinjoora. The bullet firing injured 30 others out of which 9 have bullet injuries.

The district of Shopian, known as ‘apple town’ is nowadays a hub of militancy. Most of the top commanders who are active in the valley belong to the same district. Stone pelting, encounters, strikes, demonstrations are common in the district. The district the most number of civilian killings in 2018. Two days before, a top militant commander namely Sameer Ahmad Bhat known as ‘Tiger’ was killed along with his associate in his native village Drabgam, Pulwama. The whole valley was shutdown to mourn the militants.
