Kashmiris Condemn The Unfortunate Death of Tourist, R Thirumani from Chennai

On Monday, May 9th, a family from Tamil Nadu was visiting the famous tourist place Gulmarg, in Jammu and Kashmir. The family boarded from Srinagar and was on the way towards the destination. Around 11 am, the vehicle came under heavy stone pelting at Narbal area of Budgam. One of the stone hit 22-year old R Thirumani. As per police sources, he suffered a head injury and was immediately taken to the hospital.

However, his condition deteriorated and he succumbed in the evening of the same day. The incident was condemned by all sections of the society. Even though the Indian Government has snapped the Internet Services since last Sunday, people took to the social media and condemned the criminal act.

Mehbooba Mufti, the Jammu, and Kashmir Chief Minister termed the death of R Thirumani as the “Murder of Humanity” and said the incident has rattled the mother in her. After meeting the victim’s father, Mehbooba Mufti said that those who kill someone have no religion and in such matter, her head hangs in shame.

In her tweet, she stated that “It’s truly heartbreaking when a family saves for years to realise their dream of visiting Kashmir and while they are here, they face their worst nightmare, I have no words strong enough to condemn this tragic incident or even begin to condole the family,”

The Jammu and Kashmir police had termed this incident as ‘stray incident’ and says that it is not possible to cover every lane in Kashmir.

In a tweet, the Director General of Police, SP Vaid said that “It is very unfortunate. This is the last thing we wanted Kashmir to see. People of Kashmir are known as good hosts. I request the civil society and all elders to identify such people and hand them to the police”.

The death of tourist has provoked grief and anger among the people all over the country. Leaders across political divide strongly condemned the incident and demanded the severe action against those, who are involved in it.

Similarly, ex-chief minister also condemned the act and in a tweet, Omar Abdullah wrote “we have killed a tourist by throwing stones at the vehicle he was traveling in. let’s try and wrap our heads around the fact that we stoned a tourist, a guest, to death while we glorify these stone pelters and their methods”.

The Hurriyat fractions separately condemned this act and termed it as hooliganism. Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday condemned the killing of tourist and said such incidents bring a bad name to the people’s movement.

In a tweet, he said “Deeply saddened by the news of the death of a tourist due to stone pelting. Condemn such hooliganism and rowdiness. It is totally against our ethos of treating tourists as respected guests and brings a bad name to the people’s movement”

Expressing the grief and sorrow over the death of R Thirumani from Chennai in Kashmir, the senior Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani said on Tuesday that “We have been shouldering the coffins of our loved ones on a daily basis but never can be silent on this indiscipline and hooliganism by some unruly youth.”

Sympathizing with the bereaved family, Geelani, in a statement today, said, “I feel short of words to console the bereaved family for such a tragic loss and we as a nation feel not only sorry but ashamed as well”.

The travel agents of Kashmir also expressed their solidarity towards the bereaved family and demanded the strict action against the accused people.

Ashfaq Siddiq Dug, the president of Travel Agents Association of Kashmir said that the death of tourist has deepened negative perception about Kashmir among the people living in India.

He further stated that “Whosoever killed the tourist is not a well-wisher of Kashmir as it is an inhuman act and a cold-blooded murder. Kashmir is known for its world-famous hospitality but the positive image of Valley has been maligned by this incident,”
