A 25-year-old Ph.D. scholar from Odisha attempted suicide by immolating herself in University of Hyderabad (UoH). The incident happened at around 1 am yesterday (May 16, 2018) in Ladies Hostel 7. The reason, though not officially confirmed, is said to be depression, as per the statement given by the police to different media houses. The student was immediately taken to a corporate hospital and was later shifted to Osmania General Hospital. She suffered 50 per cent burn injuries in the incident.
The student who hails from Cuttack, Odisha took admission at Department of Plant Sciences in January this year. According to the hostel inmates she herself rushed to the washroom to douse the flames. Her parents have been informed and one of her cousins who works in the city has reached the hospital.
Police have seized the student’s laptop and mobile phone as a part of their probe. Friends and hostel mates are being questioned regarding the incident. While responding to media ACP Madhapur, N. Shyam Prasad Rao, said, ‘I am informed that she had some behavioral problems and that recently she had tried to kill herself by consuming tablets.’
UoH has an alarming number of students undergoing depression and suicide attempts. ‘The mental exhaustion that students face in university campuses today is an issue that needs to to understood and dealt with from the side of the institution through regularly available helpline/counselling. Even student run groups can help in identifying and engaging with the issue. The idea should be to take mental health seriously and not be in denial which generally happens here,’ said E A Abhishek, a second year student from S.N School, University of Hyderabad.
The last reported case of suicide came from the campus on July 2017 when Vishal Tandon, another PhD student jumped from the 14th floor of his apartment in Hyderabad.
