Member of Parliament (MP) Tabassum Hasan has written to Superintendent of Police (SP), Shamli, to investigate Whatsapp posts attributing a communal post to her, after she won the Kairana Lok Sabha by-poll. According to the complaint, the post that is being falsely attributed to Hassan says, ‘Yeh Allah ki jeet hai aur Ram ki haar‘ (This is Allah’s victory and Ram’s defeat.)
The complaint letter says that the post is being shared on WhatsApp and other media with the intention of spreading communal hatred. The post, which is communal in nature, targets Hasan’s Muslim identity by saying that her victory in the by-poll is the Muslim god Allah’s victory and the Hindu god Ram’s defeat. Hassan says in the complaint that the spreading of this fake post looks organized in nature.
After the Karnataka elections that saw a dramatic showdown in which the United Opposition clinched the government by the coming together of various political parties to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the same strategy was used in Kairana by-polls. Tabassum Hasan defeated her nearest BJP rival Mriganka Singh by a huge margin of 44,600 votes in Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana. Tabassam was a Rashtriya Lok Dal candidate and was supported by the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Hasan was unambiguous in her response to the victory and had said, ‘Kairana me hi BJP ko dafan karna.’ (We had to bury BJP in Kairana). Kairana saw a combination of Jat votes from RLD, OBC votes of SP, and Dalit votes of BSP outsmarting the Hindutva vote bank. These encouraging results have been a shot in the arm for the strategy makers in the opposition parties and a major headache for BJP.
