The Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué on Tuesday appointed Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Malik arrived in Srinagar from Patna in a special plane and would assume office as the 13th Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after the formal swearing-in ceremony.
At the Srinagar International Airport, the Governor-designate was received by the Member Parliament and former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah; Advisors to the Governor, B B Vyas, K Vijay Kumar & Khurshid Ahmad Ganai; Chief Secretary, BVR Subrahmanyam; Director General Police, Dr S P Vaid; Principal Secretary to Governor, Umang Narula; Financial Commissioners, Administrative Secretaries, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, IGP Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Budgam and other senior officers of the civil, police administration and the Army.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir have been under Governor’s Rule since June 20, after the BJP ended its coalition government with Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP). After the end of the coalition, the state came under Governor rule under N N Vohra, who was appointed by the UPA government in 2008 and the BJP government continued with him. Even though his term had ended on June 28, the Government of India (GoI) decided to continue with him. The Amarnath Yatra was due to start at the time and the Governor was heading the board which was looking into elaborate security cover.
Meanwhile, Senior BJP leader Lal Ji Tandon was appointed as the Governor of Bihar replacing Malik.
