Kashmir Valley Receives First Snowfall in November after 9 Years

On Saturday afternoon, after a period of nine years, Kashmir received its first snowfall.

Last time, the valley had witnessed snowfall in 2009. This is the fourth time since 2000 that the valley has recorded snowfall in November. Most parts of Kashmir received the snowfall from Saturday morning. However, in Srinagar, it began to snow in the afternoon.

According to MeT officials, Srinagar recorded 4 cm of snow, while the city recorded a maximum of 6.3 degrees Celsius temperature and a minimum of 8.6 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded 31 cm snowfall and recorded a maximum of minus 1.3 degree Celsius temperature and a minimum of 3.0 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Pahalgam received 18 cm of snowfall. The temperature at the place was a maximum of 6.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 0.4 degrees Celsius. Kupwara recorded 2 cm of snow while a minimum of 6.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 2.9 degrees Celsius temperature.

Within hours of the snowfall, the trees were uprooted and electricity was suspended in most parts of the valley. The rural areas also reeled under darkness due to power failure. The Director of MET department, Sonam Lotus informed reporters that the weather would start improving fully from Monday. He also said that the sky would remain cloudy. “In next 24 hours there can be scattered rains and snow, but the weather will overall improve from Monday,” he said.

Scores of heavy and light vehicles which were moving from Srinagar to Jammu were stranded at the road. The Famous Mughal road and Srinagar-Leh continued to remain closed while roads leading to hilly areas that included Tangdhar, Machil and Keran in northern Kashmir have been closed for traffic. Along with traffic, the airport officials also cancelled ten flights from Srinagar International Airport because of bad weather. “There was poor visibility and runway was under snow,” officials said adding that they were hopeful that operations will start tomorrow. “Snow is being cleared from the runway,” they added.
