Srinagar:

The former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti demanded divisional status to Pir Panchal region and Chenab valley saying that if such a status was not granted, the party would launch an agitation against the governor. Mehbooba also said that the governor should not encroach upon the democratic space in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

As per reports, the governor’s administration is going to accord a divisional status to ladakh. “The demand of ladakh should be fulfilled and we are not opposing it. But we request the governor to approve the similar decision for the region of Pir Panchal and Chenab valley as well,” Mehbooba said. Meanwhile, Mehbooba also said that she hoped other mainstream parties including the National Conference and the Congress, as well as independent MLA’s were united on this issue. While justifying her demand, Mehbooba said both Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley were far-flung areas and taking such a decision “could help provide good governance and pave way for creation of hill development councils for both the regions”.

The PDP chief also said that there was a hidden agenda behind such decisions and that it was similar to the revoking of the Roshni scheme. “There is no emergency or hurry in issuing the orders that he is issuing. They can be taken when we have an elected government in place. It seems there is somebody’s hidden hand behind all this. But I hope the governor will not be a part of it,”says Mehbooba Mufti. The PDP president also said that since the state has come under governor’s rule, many decisions and orders were passed by the governor and his council which were not in the interest of Jammu and Kashmir.
