Myanmar court rejected an appeal by two Reuters reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were jailed for breaking country’s Official Secret Act. The jailed journalists were investigating the killing of 10 Rohingya men and boys by security forces. These killing were part of a wider army crackdown on Rohingyas and forced 700,000 of them to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh.
The pair were among a group of journalists named by Time magazine as its “Person of the Year”. Human rights organisations, activists and diplomats have called for their release internationally. The support for the journalists within Myanmar is muted.
The Myanmar state counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel peace prize winner has resisted calls to pardon Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. Suu Kyi had said in September 2018 that the reporter’s jailing had nothing to do with freedom of expression.
