Kerala government proposes to establish green belt in Idukki

Kerala government is proposing to establish a green belt in Idukki along the Kerala-Tamilnadu border in order to recover the lost ecological wealth of the region. Additional Secretary P H Kurian told The Hindu that the officials of the Department of Environment and Kerala Forest Institute will study the feasibility of such a green belt and submit a proposal by next year. According to Mr Kurian, the adverse effects of climate change was most evident in Idukki compared to other districts in Kerala. He said there was a need to evolve new ideas for risk reduction, frame new laws and regulations to match the changing environment due to climate change.
