Supreme Court judge AK Sikri, who was part of the selection panel that removed former CBI director Alok Verma has turned down a post-retirement post offered to him by the government. The other members of the selection panel were Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. Sikri’s vote was crucial since the decision to remove Sikri was taken with a 2:1 majority.
He was nominated to the post of president/member of the London-based Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal (CSAT). He decided to withdraw his consent after the criticism he received after the voting. Congress leaders Ahmed Patel and Rahul Gandhi had criticised the offer. Rahul Gandhi had alleged that “fear was driving PM Modi” to take such decisions.
