The police arrested more than 2000 research scholars on January 16, 2019, who were protesting outside the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s headquarters in New Delhi. The protesters were Research scholars from all over India demanding a hike in their stipend. They have been demanding the hike for past six months and were forced to take to the streets because of government’s inaction.

The students claimed that they were protesting peacefully when police arrested them. The researchers are now planning to hold an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar till their demands are met by the government. They demand an 80 per cent hike in their fellowship applicable from April 1, 2018.
