Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday (March 5th) finalised its seat-sharing deal with CPI(M) and MDMK for the upcoming parliament elections. Of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, CPI(M) have been offered two and MDMK were offered one Lok Sabha and one Rajya Sabha seat. The confirmation came after a meeting between DMK president M.K Stalin and CPM State Secretary K.Balakrishnan.

Addressing the media, M.K Stalin said, “We have allocated 10 seats to our alliance Congress and another 10 have been given for other alliance partners. DMK will contest from the remaining 20 seats. The identification of seats will begin from 7th March.”

With this, DMK will be leading a rainbow alliance in the state. The DMK led alliance comprises of the Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (CPI), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Katchi (MDMK) , Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) , Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi (KMDK) and Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK).

Of the total 39 seats, Congress has been offered 10 seats, CPM, CPI and VCK have been offered 2 seats, and MDMK, IJK, and IUML were offered one seat each. With the new announcement, the party has also shut the door on Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). Vijayakanth led DMDK had held talks with both DMK and AIADMK-BJP alliance. The actor-led party, which was expected to join the AIADMK alliance by Wednesday, had held a last minute meeting with DMK.

However, DMK treasurer Duraimugan said, “We have no room for DMDK in our alliance.” He said that DMDK’s L.K Sudhish approached him to reconsider the alliance. “I said to them that your party is not in a steady phase. Two days back OPS (O.Paneerselvam) met your leader and the photos were all over the Internet and now you are asking whether you could join us, How can I believe you?” he added.

DMDK is still continuing discussions with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). AIADMK, on the other hand, confirmed its seat allocation with BJP and PMK. BJP has been offered 5 seats and Pattali Makkal Katchi was offered seven seats. Other than this they have allocated one seat each for Puthiya Needhi Katchi (PNK), Puthiya Thamizhagam and N.R Congress.
