Subal Bhowmik, the BJP Tripura state vice president today announced his departure from the BJP to join Congress. The decision was made after his meeting with PCC president Pradyot Kishore Manikya.
Mr Bhowmik said to the media that his candidature will be announced by Congress President Rahul Gandhi at an election rally happening in Khumlang. Mr Bhowmik is likely to contest to the Loksabha on the Congress ticket from the West Tripura constituency.
Only a few years ago Former MLA Subal Bhowmik left the Congress to join the BJP. Now Bhowmik and his support base will now move back to Congress, which was hailed as “homecoming” by the PCC general Secretary Baptu Chakraborty.
Mr Rahul Gandhi will begin his Northeast campaign today covering Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura. The new move will boost the morale of the Congress in Tripura, which saw a nasty lose of party leaders to BJP before the last legislative assembly in which BJP came into power for the first time in the state overthrowing the long lasted left front rule.
The left front has already announced the candidates for both constituencies. However, BJP is yet to announce the candidates and the sudden departure of party leaders and the split with allies are rocking the boat when they were expecting to win Loksabha seats from Tripura for the first time in the history.
The state is expected to witness a tough 3 cornered competition between the three fronts led by- CPM, Congress and BJP. However, both Congress and BJP are facing challenges from their allies INPT and IPFT who have decided to field their own candidates for Lok Sabha elections.
While IPFT has already announced their candidates, BJP and Congress are expected to release their list within a few days. Polling for Tripura West will be held in the first phase on Aprill 11 and Tripura East in the second phase on April 18. Votes will be counted on May 23.
