Senior IPS officer of the state and former Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing director DGP Jacob Thomas will contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha election from Chalakudy constituency in Thrissur. Jacob Thomas, who is under suspension from December 2017, will be fielded as the candidate of Twenty20 Kizhakkambalam, an organization led by Anna – Kitex group of companies in Kerala. He was suspended for criticizing the present government.

Thomas Jacob had 18 months more for his retirement. He has been submitted resignation to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office as well as to the Centre. He is expected to announce his candidature on Sunday. In Chalakudy Benny Behanan is the UDF candidate while sitting MP Innocent is the LDF candidate.

Thomas Jacob, who was a close aide of Pinarayi Vijayan was appointed as the director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. It was in 2017 when the LDF government came into office. But later he was replaced from the post when he registered a case against minister E.P. Jayarajan. Later he got suspended for criticizing the government in Oghi disaster relief. The reason for his next suspension was writing an autobiography and last for a public speech criticizing the government.

“Jacob Thomas has expressed his willingness to contest the election in Chalakudy constituency under the Twenty20 ticket,” Sabu Jacob, chairman of Kitex Group, told media.

T20K (Twenty20 Kizhakkambalam) is an organization in Kizhakkambalam of Ernakulam district, led by Kitex Group. Its prime objective is to convert Kizhakkambalam Grama Panchayat the best Grama Panchayat in India by the year 2020. 19 members of Twenty20 had contested the Kizhakkambalam Panchayat elections in 2015 as independents and 17 of them won.

Jacob Thomas has officially submitted papers for government approval. But there are a few legal barriers as he is an IPS officer. He is waiting for the government to accept his resignation and relieve him to file the nomination papers on time. This is the first time in Kerala history that an IPS officer who is in suspension is contesting an election.
