While Congress plans to field party president Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad, BJP state unit is likely to have another dispute with its ally, Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS). BJP may take the Wayanad seat from BDJS if Rahul confirms his candidature in Wayanad. BJP’s Wayanad district committee has requested its state leaders to consider fielding a national leader in Wayanad against Rahul if he contests. But, BDJS is unwilling to give up on the Wayanad seat, which was already given to them.
BJP State President P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said that if Rahul Gandhi opts Wayanad to contest in the Lok Sabha polls, BJP will fight with all its might. “I have been able to understand the sentiments of BJP activists in Wayanad and Kerala in general. I will convey it to the BDJS and BJP national leadership. The possibility of BJP taking over Wayanad seat from BDJS cannot be dismissed,” Sreedharan Pillai said.
Meanwhile, BDJS leader Thushar Vellappally on Sunday said that they are not planning to leave the seat. “No NDA leader has asked to vacate the seat if Rahul contests. Hope they don’t make such a demand”, Thushar said.
BDJS has fielded their five candidates in Wayanad, Alathur, Idukki, Thrissur and Mavelikkara constituencies. Thushar will be contesting from the Thrissur seat. The BJP will contest in 14 of the 20 Lok Sabha seats. And P. C. Thoms led Kerala Congress will contest from the Kottayam constituency.
But at the same time, Rahul Gandhi has not responded officially over his candidature in Wayanad. Congress leaders in Kerala are hoping that their request to Rahul Gandhi on Wayanad would be accepted soon. Senior party leader and former CM of the state Oommen Chandy said the presence of Rahul Gandhi in the poll arena in Kerala would give a huge boost to party workers and that was why they wanted him to contest from Wayanad as a second constituency.
