The upcoming LC polls in the union territory of Puducherry will be an extension of the situations in Tamil Nadu. With the AIADMK having allotted the Lok Sabha seat to the AINRC and DMK to the Congress, the contest is between the Congress and the AINRC.
Both the sides have declared their candidates.
Congress has decided to field the present speaker of Puducherry legislative assembly Mr.Vaithalingam as their candidate. Mr Vaithilingam, a two-time Chief Minister, was chosen by the Congress high command. But, former chief minister and founder of AINR Congress, NR Rangaswamy have a young blood Dr.Narayanaswami against veteran politician Vaithalingam. It was almost clear a few months ago itself that the party was looking for a new face after the present MP, R.Radhakrishnan had fallen out of favour with Mr Rangasamy.
Mr Narayanasamy is a qualified medical doctor with a degree in business administration from Cardiff University, UK. He is also the Managing director of Sri Manakula Vinayaga Educational Trust and of Mailam Subramaniya Swamy Educational Trust, which is one of the biggest of its kind in the region. His father, N. Kesavan, had served as a government whip in the Legislative Assembly. On the other hand, Mr Vaithilingam represented the Nettapakkam constituency from 1985 to 2011. In the 2011 Assembly elections, He moved to Kamaraj Nagar constituency after Nettappakkam was made a reserved Assembly segment. He won the 2011 and 2016 Assembly elections from Kamaraj Nagar.
The Puducherry Union territory has been in the news recently because of a tussle between the chief minister V Narayanasamy (Cong) and the Lt Governor Kiran Bedi. Appointed by the BJP government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mrs Bedi. The turf between the chief minister and Lt Governor took a serious turn with the former holding a sit-in in front of Raj Bhavan for 6 days.
