Kings XI Punjab defeated Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs during their inaugural IPL encounter in Jaipur. The match will but be discussed for the “Chowkidar Chor Hai” chant from the gallery. The video of the chant has gone viral in social media. The slogan was raised in 19th over of the match when the score of King XI Punjab was 169 for 3.

The videos are going viral and had become a point of discussion in social media. Sanjay Kumar Jha, the former CEO of GlobalFoundries and former chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobility tweeted, “#ChowkidarChorHai is a rage. And for a reason. Maybe Joshi and Pandey misread the popular mood.”

Chowkidar Chor Hai (the watchman is a thief) was the political slogan used by Congress President Rahul Gandhi against PM Narendra Modi while alleging corruption in the Rafale aircraft deal. BJP, however, started a counter-campaign “Main Bhi Chowkidar” which meant “I am a watchman too.”

To counter the Rafale attack, Modi added the prefix ‘Chowkidar’ to his Twitter handle which was soon followed by almost all BJP leaders, including senior Union, Cabinet ministers and state leaders to changing their names. From Sushma Swaraj to Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh himself, everyone is a chowkidar now on Twitter.

Modi had tweeted, “My best wishes to all you chowkidars. Very pleased with your enthusiasm. Owing to your watchfulness corruption is on the wane and thieves are feeling the pain.”

In fact, it was prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections that PM Modi started calling himself a chowkidar. He started reusing the phrase days after Pulwama terror attacks. He had said that his duty is to protect the country at any cost.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh has come out with a new slogan to save Modi from the ongoing ‘Chowkidar attacks’. “Chowkidar chor Nahi, chowkidar pure hai” is the ‘newly invented’ slogan by Rajnath Singh. Singh raised the slogan at an election rally on Tuesday.
