Thushar Vellappally, the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) president, will be BJP’s candidate for north Kerala’s Wayanad constituency. Vellappally’s name was announced by BJP president Amit Shah via Twitter on Monday. He is fielded against Congress president Rahul Gandhi. After long confusions, it was on Sunday that the Congress had confirmed the candidature of Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad besides his Amethi seat.
” I proudly announce Shri Thushar Vellappally, president of Bharat Dharma Jana Sena, as NDA candidate from Wayanad. A vibrant and dynamic youth leader, he represents our commitment towards development and social justice. With him, the NDA will emerge as Kerala’s political alternative,” Shah tweeted.
Tushar acknowledged his candidature with a response in Twitter itself. “Sir thanks for giving me the opportunity and big thanks for the kind words. This behind the curtain drama of the left and congress we will expose to our countrymen. I am with you in this fight to eradicate foreign rule from our motherland. Namo Again,” Thushar tweeted.
Thushar Vellappally is the president of the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena, which is an ally of the NDA. The party came into existence in December 2015. Vellappally Natesan, Thushar’s father is a household name in the state. As per local news reports, the buzz had been that Thushar Vellappally is likely to contest from Thrissur but with the latest announcement, it is clear that Thushar Vellappally is set to take on Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad.
After the Sabarimala controversy in Kerala, BJP has found a new foothold in the Left-ruled state. The party now aims at challenging both the ruling Left Front as well as the Congress in Kerala. BJP hit out at the Congress saying the move was out of the fear that Rahul Gandhi may lose his Amethi bastion to Union minister Smriti Irani in the elections.
Left leaders have also said that Congress fielding Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad stands in direct conflict with the idea of Opposition unity and the common goal of defeating the BJP.
