Amethi (UP):

Beginning the most awaited fight in the upcoming Lok Sabha election, Congress president Rahul Gandhi will file his nomination for the Amethi LS seat in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. Meanwhile, his opponent and Union Textiles Minister, Smriti Irani will be submitting her nomination papers on Thursday.

According to a letter by the Special Protection Group to the Amethi district magistrate, Rahul will be accompanied by Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while Smriti will be along with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BJP in charge for Amethi Mohsin Raza, state minister and MLA Jagdishpur Suresh Pasi.

Rahul Gandhi, who has been representing the constituency for the past 15 years, will also hold a roadshow in Gauriganj town – the administrative headquarters prior to the submission of his nomination. He will also be fighting from Wayanad in Kerala, from where he has filed his nomination papers last week. Meanwhile, former Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will file her nomination for Raebareli constituency on Thursday. Amethi and Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh have been Congress’ bastions for decades now.

The Amethi parliamentary constituency, represented in the Lok Sabha by Congress president Rahul Gandhi, has four Assembly segments. They are Tiloi, Gauriganj and Jagdishpur (reserved) in Amethi district and Salon (reserved) in Raebareli. In 2014, Rahul Gandhi had defeated Irani by over one lakh votes in Amethi.

At the same time, Smriti will perform rituals at a temple of Budhan Mai inside the BJP office at Gauriganj on the Banda-Tanda national highway, before reaching the collectorate at the Amethi district headquarters, in a procession to file her papers.

Earlier, Smriti Irani had attacked Rahul Gandhi for his decision to fight in Kerala in addition to his traditional stronghold of Amethi in UP. Smriti had told media that his decision to contest from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala was an “insult” to the people of Amethi.

Amethi will go to the polling booth in the fifth phase on May 6.
