Congress, on Thursday, alleged security fault as a green laser light pointed at its president Rahul Gandhi during his roadshow in Amethi. Congress said there’s a threat to Rahul Gandhi’s life and has written to the Union home ministry. Accusing the Uttar Pradesh administration of an “alarming lapse”, the party asked the Centre to “probe and neutralize the threat”, if any.
The letter, undersigned by senior Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala, said “A perusal of his media interaction will reflect that a laser (green) was pointed at his head, intermittently on at least seven separate occasions in a short period; including twice at his temple on the right side of the head. A perusal of the video by various persons including former security personnel leads to a prima facie conclusion that this laser could emanate from a potential weapon such as a sniper gun,” it said. The letter added, even a possibility like this is a cause of serious alarm and concern pointing towards a breach in the security.
The Congress has requested the Home Minister to initiate immediate action and demanded full security protocol including appropriate sanitization of the area, particularly during the extensive electioneering in the ongoing polls.
But at the same time, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that it has not received any letter regarding a breach in Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s security, but as soon as its attention was drawn to media reports, the Special Protection Group (SPG) Director was asked to verify the facts. It also said that the “green light” pointed at Rahul Gandhi in Amethi on April 10 was of a mobile phone used by a photographer of All India Congress Committee (AICC), according to a report by ANI.
Meanwhile, NDTV reported that the home ministry has denied receiving any letter. The ministry, however, said the SPG chief, after going through the video clipping, remarked that the matter had “no security implication whatsoever”.
The incident happened on Wednesday after Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers from Amethi for the Lok Sabha elections. Prior to filing his nomination, Rahul conducted a roadshow in Amethi along with Priyanka Gandhi.
