Things have gone out of the possibilities of the term rumour when it comes to the question of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting from Varanasi constituency from where the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also seeking voters approval to power. If the speculations come true, Priyanka Gandhi’s electoral debut will be against the prime minister of India.
NDTV reports that Congress sources had told them that “The chances are 50-50,” revealing that discussions are on between its top leaders. Priyanka Gandhi’s mother Sonia Gandhi, former Congress president, is among those who have reservations about sending her to battle in the very first election after she joined politics. But the sources add that Priyanka Gandhi has conveyed strongly that she is not worried about winning or losing.
Priyanka had hinted at her contesting from Varanasi more than once in public. To straight out questions about this rumoured candidature, she has replied to the media that she would contest from Varanasi “if the party asks me.” Another time, during an interaction with Congress workers who wanted her to contest from Raebareli, her mother Sonia Gandhi’s constituency, she said: “Why not Varanasi.”
Priyanka’s criticism for how Narendra Modi has treated his constituency over the last five year has been vocal during the election campaigning in Uttar Pradesh. “I was stunned to hear from people in Varanasi that in five years, the PM didn’t get time to go to a single village, visit even one family in his constituency,” she said once.
As per the news, the last decision is left with Congress Party chief Rahul Gandhi. Last week, when asked whether he planned to field his sister against PM Modi, he replied to The Hindu newspaper that “I will leave you in suspense. Suspense is not always a bad thing.”
But it is still not clear if the opposition will support Priyanka Gandhi if she stands against Modi. On Monday, the Samajwadi Party had named Shalini Yadav, the daughter-in-law of a former Congress lawmaker, as the opposition candidate from Varanasi.
The decision about Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature, have to be taken over the next few days as the last date for filing nominations for Varanasi is April 29.
