Lucknow:

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks in which he claimed he belongs to the most-backward caste community. Mayawati alleged that PM Modi was born into an upper caste, but converted it by himself to the backward class tag for ‘political gain’ during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.

“Narendra Modi is from the upper caste, but during his time as chief minister of Gujarat, he got his community enlisted under the OBC category for political gains,” she said at a press conference at her Mall Avenue residence in Lucknow.

“What have I said wrong when I say Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not backward by birth like Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son SP chief Akhilesh Yadav are. This is the fact, what wrong have I said ?” asked Mayawati.

She also denied having any role in the alleged sugar mills scam in 2010-11 when she was the Uttar Pradesh chief minister. The BSP chief also accused the BJP of using investigating agencies as “caged parrots”. She also alleged that the BJP is attempting to give a communal colour to the elections. “The party, she said, has performed poorly in the three phases of Lok Sabha elections and will continue its poor performance for the next phases of polling”.

On last Thursday, Mayawati had accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of ignoring the alleged model code violations by PM Narendra Modi.

“PM Modi is moving freely without care despite facing numerous serious allegations of the Model Code of Conduct violation, thanks to the ECI. That’s why he has started crossing the limit so far as respect for women is concerned. Hasn’t the Bharatiya Janata Party /Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh imposed a great leader upon the country ?” Mayawati had tweeted on Thursday morning.

At the same time, the ECI earlier had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the country on the test-firing of an anti-satellite missile did not violate the model code of conduct.
