The Ministry of Home Affairs, on Tuesday, has issued a notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi in connection with a complaint filed by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy questioning his citizenship. According to the notice, Rahul Gandhi has to respond within a fortnight.
In the letter, the MHA says that Rahul has declared his nationality as British in an annual return filed by a British company named Backops Ltd, on the basis of Subramanian Swamy’s complaint. “You are requested to intimate the factual position in the matter to this Ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of this communication,” the letter read.
“It has been brought out that a Company named Backops Limited was registered in the UK in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire S023 9EH and Rahul Gandhi was one of the Directors and Secretary of the said company”, the MHA said in the notice.
At the same time, the complaint has evoked a strong reaction from the Congress party. Speaking to news agency ANI, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said: “The entire world knows Rahul Gandhi is Indian citizen by birth. Modi Ji has no answer for unemployment, Modi Ji has no answer for agrarian distress and black money, that’s why he’s resorting to the fake narrative through his government’s notices to divert attention.”
But, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh termed the notice as routine, saying, “When a member of parliament writes to any ministry, the action is required on their query is taken. It is not a big development, it is a normal process.”
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also accused Rahul Gandhi calling him a “man of mystery” and raised questions about the nationality of the Congress chief. “Where is he originally from ?” Patra asked while addressing a press conference on Tuesday. He claimed that documents proved that Gandhi held a 65% stake in a UK firm and his nationality was mentioned as British according to the papers related to the firm.
Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi termed the entire controversy over the Congress President’s citizenship as “rubbish” and asserted that Rahul was very much Indian. “This is rubbish. Rahul was born in front of all. He has spent his entire life here. This is all drama,” Priyanka Gandhi said.
