The Biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi is about to release on May 24, a day after the results of the ongoing LS election is declared, says producers of the movie. Earlier last month, the Election Commission had banned the film until the end of elections, saying its release would interfere with free and fair polling. It was all set to release the movie on April 11, the same day of the first phase of Lok Sabha election polling began.
Following an appeal made by the producers to the Supreme Court that the EC’s decision was arbitrary given that it had not watched the film, the EC had submitted that the movie was, in fact, eulogizing the political leader, and producing an environment where an individual acquires cult status, besides showing Opposition parties in poor light.
On April 17, EC officials had watched the film in a special screening on the directions of the Supreme Court. A committee with a total of seven officials set up for the purpose was present for the screening. The top court had asked EC to watch the movie and submit its view by April 22.
“As responsible citizens, we respect the law of the country. After a lot of discussions and keeping the curiosity and excitement about the film in mind we have decided to release it immediately after the Lok Sabha election results. I hope now nobody has any problem with the film and we are hoping for a smooth release this time,” producer Sandip Singh said in a statement.
“We are now releasing our film on 24th May 2019. This is the first time a film will be promoted for only four days. I hope now nobody has any problem with the film and we are hoping for the smooth release this time,” he added.
Directed by Omung Kumar, the film also features Boman Irani, Manoj Joshi, Prashant Narayanan, Zarina Wahab, Barkha Sengupta and Darshan Kumaar, among others.
