Congress president Rahul Gandhi, on Monday, said that despite the insulting remarks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his father Rajiv Gandhi, he only has love for Modi. He was addressing a rally near Jama Masjid for party’s Chandni Chowk candidate J.P. Agarwal.
“He is the Prime Minister of the country but insults a martyr (Rajiv Gandhi). I told him whatever hatred you have for me… You can belittle me, you can say whatever you say about my father, mother, grandfather, grandmother. Whatever hatred you direct against me, I will only return it with love,” he said. Recalling the moment he hugged Modi in Parliament, Rahul said, “Hatred can only be defeated by love. Remember, the same love will defeat you Narendra Modiji on May 23.”
While there is no official response, a delegation of senior Congress leaders met Election Commission officials to demand that PM Modi be banned from campaigning as a penalty for denigrating Rajiv Gandhi. So far, the Prime Minister has received clean chits from the Commission for various remarks which the Congress alleged were a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
On last Saturday, Modi had targeted Rajiv Gandhi, while attacking the Congress president Rahul Gandhi at a rally in Uttar Pradesh. “Your father was termed Mr Clean by his courtiers, but his life ended as bhrashtachari no 1,” Modi had said, targeting the opposition leaders. He was referring to the Bofors scam, in which Rajiv Gandhi was implicated.
Congress had appealed to the Election Commission seeking a campaign ban on Modi, on the following day. Later, on Monday, Modi challenged Congress to fight the Lok Sabha elections in the name of “Bofors accused” Rajiv Gandhi.
