Continuing his attack on Rajiv Gandhi, Modi accused him and the Gandhi family of using INS Viraat s for vacation, contending that it had compromised national security. He was addressing the BJP rally held at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Wednesday,
“Rahul Gandhi says the armed forces are no one’s personal forces. But the Gandhi used INS Viraat as their personal taxi when Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister was on a 10-day holiday. The ship was on duty but was diverted to pick up the Gandhis. Rajiv Gandhi’s in-laws were also present. Should foreigners have been carried on an Indians warship? Wasn’t this playing with India’s security? INS Viraat was insulted by using it as a personal taxi”, Modi said in Delhi.
He also claimed that after picking up the Gandhi family, INS Viraat halted at an island for 10 days. Aircraft carrier INS Viraat was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1987. After nearly 30 years of service, India’s first aircraft carrier was formally decommissioned in March 2017.
Along with attacking the Congress, Modi also went on to congratulate his own government for its anti-terror policy and hailed the designation of Jaish-e-Mohammad founder Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. “What seemed impossible earlier is now possible. India is on the way to becoming one of the world’s safest countries”, Modi said.
Congress has approached the Supreme Court against PM Modi’s recent attacks over former PM Rajiv Gandhi. The Congress on Tuesday told the SC that Modi’s remarks to “malign and tarnish” the image of Rajiv Gandhi, who was killed in a terror attack, was ”obscene”. The Congress had also lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on May 6 against Modi’s remarks against Rajiv Gandhi.
