Filmmaker Dr.Biju’s movie ‘Veyil marangal’ (Trees under the sun) won the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award at the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival. The news was announced through his Facebook page by the director himself. This is the first Indian film to win the award.
In Indrans starred Veyil Marangal, Dr Biju “expands the discussion to include the fury and healing power of nature, which works alongside age-old discrimination in the lives of a Dalit family from southern India,” says Hollywood Reporter.
The jury was headed by Turkish filmmaker Nuri Beige Ceylan, who is known for his films “Once upon a time in Anatolia” and Winter sleep.
Dr Biju is known for his films Saira, Raman, Veettilekkulla Vazhi, Akashathinte Niram, Perariyathavar, Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal, Kaadu Pookkunna Neram, Sound of Silence and Painting Life.
“Trees under the sun (Veyil marangal) won Best Artistic achievement award at 22nd Shanghai international film festival. This is the first time an Indian film won an award at Shanghai. And I am.glad it came from a jury headed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. And this is the award for Malayalam cinema after a long long time in a major international film festival by FIAPF,” he wrote.
