A two-storeyed shoe shop, located at Thoppumpady junction, was burnt down in a fire that broke out here on Monday. The shop- “Marson footwears”- is located opposite to the main bus stop in Thoppumpady. The owner had a loss of 35 lakhs in the incident.
However, the shop owner greeted us with a welcoming smile. “Didn’t we overcome floods? I shall survive this too,” he said.
“The fire-force took 25 minutes to reach here. We tried to put off the fire with the available extinguisher. But we couldn’t stop it from spreading,” he added.
The shop hadn’t renewed its insurance. “The major challenge would be to rebuild the shop,” he says.
It was at around 12.30 that the passersby informed of smoke coming from the second floor of the building. The people in and around the shop were immediately evacuated. There were no casualities.
Fire tenders from nine units, including Gandhi Nagar, Club Road, Mattancherry, Thripunithura, Cochin Port Trust and Aroor, were involved in fire-fighting operations. It took around two hours and the service of 45 fire and rescue workers to bring the fire under control.
The entire stock kept on the second floor was burnt.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown, however, initial examination suggests a short circuit.
