The consequences of a “complete economic shutdown” will “disastrously amplify” death toll arising out of the outbreak of the pandemic said former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in a letter, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Though a global pandemic, covid-19 would have a different impact on India, given its unique conditions and dependence of a large population on daily wages according to Gandhi.
“A complete lockdown and the resulting shutdown of our economic engine will almost certainly ensure the millions of unemployed youth rush back to their villages, increasing the risk of infecting their parents, grandparents and the elderly population. This will result in catastrophic loss of life,” Gandhi said in the letter.
“It is also critical that we set up a defensive wall around our key financial and strategic institutions to protest them from the shock wave that is bound to come as the true impact of the virus and our economic shutdown hit us a few weeks from now. Our informal economy and immense network of small and medium businesses and farmers are going to be vital for any rebuilding efforts,” Gandhi added.
