Srinagar:

Inspector General of Police (Traffic) Basant Kumar Rath was reportedly transferred after his tiff with the newly appointed Srinagar Mayor Junaid Mattu. Alok Kumar was appointed as the new IGP traffic of Jammu and Kashmir, in his place. Rath, which is known as “Singham” in Kashmir, had a verbal tiff with Mattu on Twitter. In a tweet, Rath called had Mattu “cabbage” on the issue of Srinagar’s wetlands. He also countered Mattu on traffic de-congestion of Srinagar by asking him not to breach his mandate.

From yesterday, social media was rife with the news of the transfer of Rath. Several young men and women had come out in support of Rath stating that he was people-friendly, pro-valley and an honest police officer. They also said that he not only closed the doors of corruption but also managed the traffic de-congestion across the state.

Meanwhile, Rath also came to the attention of India media when he replied to a tweet by Virat Kohli. In the tweet, Kohil had told a fan to leave the country if he wasn’t supporting any batsman. In his reply, Rath wrote, “Dear Virat Kohli, I love Javed Miandad. You please keep your cricket patriotism to yourself, and to your advertisement contracts.”

Rath, the 2000-batch Indian Police Service officer from Orissa, has been one of the most known faces of the Jammu and Kashmir police on social media platforms.
