Chintamani who had been forging a battle with Adani power plant at Godda was slapped with false accusation by the Godda Police Station officials. The activist was accused of providing shelter to Naxalites at his Ashram. Chintamani has refused the claim calling it a part of the strategic move against him by Adani group of companies. He had been fighting a legal battle against the power plant of Adani Ltd. at Godda for long now.
Speaking to TWJ correspondent, Chintamani said, “I went to the SP today. The SP was given a false tip off. The SP didn’t tell me if the company or the people of the company gave the message. However, who else could it be as I am standing against them?”
Godda is located in Eastern Jharkhand, and is populated by Adani Power Plant Ltd who has built a coal-fired Thermal Power Plant at Godda. The power plant is said to generate 1600 megawatts of electricity which the company is planning to export to Bangladesh. The villagers residing in more than ten villages in Godda had been part of massive protest against Adani over land acquisition. The entire project needs around 1214 acres of land, of which around 200 acres have been acquired till date. “70 percent of this land is agricultural fields and 90 percent of the affected are farmers. Close to 3000 trees were cut down, turning the place into a desert,” says Chintamani.
“The district administration is trying to acquire five thousand acres of land for the plant in Poraiyahaat and Godda blocks by hook or by crook on the direction of the BJP-led government. of the district. Villagers have opposed the acquisition by conducting staged gram sabhas and public hearings. At present, 1,700 acres of multi-crop land are to be acquired in a densely-populated region. Thousands of people will suffer due to the power plant and they have to be displaced, but the Raghubar Das government in Jharkhand is going ahead the project, neglecting voices of the farmers,” CPM Jharkhand said.
Chintamani’s Ashram is located right opposite to the Adani power plant. “My ashram, Sarvoday ashram, is opposite the Adani site. They received a tip off that a few Naxalites stayed over at the ashram on the eve of the 16th. A person they named is a member of Jharkhand Janadhikhar Mahasabha and is affiliated to a Maoist organisation,” says Chintamani.
However, Chintamani said that these allegations that are coming out now are baseless. “I told the SP that this allegation is completely baseless as I am also affiliated to Jharkhand Janadhikar Sangatan but the person by the said name did not stay at my ashram. I told them the truth as to who from the Mahasabha came to my ashram that day for fact finding. However, they left once it was done and no one stayed back. They called me for enquiry on the basis of the tip-off. I talked to the SP and he was convinced,” he said. “So I think it is a method by the company to frame and imprison me. I was previously also booked under false cases and now I am out on bail. This is quite expected as I am standing against Adani Company. However, after the inquiry today, the SP is convinced of my innocence,” he added. The Godda SP was unavailable to comment on the issue.
