Dilbag Singh Replaces S P Vaid as Director General of Police in Jammu and Kashmir

In an admistrative move, the Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday ordered the transfer of Director General of Police (DGP) Shesh Paul Vaid and assigned the charge to Dilbag Singh, a 1987 batch Indian Police Service officer.

According to a government order, Vaid’s services have been placed at the disposal of the General Administration Department for further posting as state transport commissioner. S P Vaid, an IPS officer of 1986 batch, was appointed as the DGP by the previous PDP-BJP government.

So far, Mr Singh has held important positions in Jammu and Kashmir Police including serving as the intelligence chief of the state. In 2000, Dilbagh Singh was suspended as the Deputy Inspector General of south Kashmir’s Anantnag after he was allegedly found involved in a major recruitment scam. However, he was made the head of the prison department in March this year after the daring escape of a Pakistani terrorist from a Srinagar hospital in February. Twenty-year-old Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Naveed Jatt, who was brought to the hospital from the Srinagar Central Jail for treatment escaped after gunmen killed two policemen on duty during the hospital stay.

Earlier this week, Dr B Srinivas replaced Abdul Gani Mir as head of the criminal investigation department, the intelligence wing of the Jammu and Kashmir police. As per sources, the government of India, as well as the advisor to the government on security affairs, K Vijay Kumar, were keen on making changes at the top level.

The changes in the top brass come at the time when the government is set to hold the Municipal and Panchayat polls in the state, and days after militants abducted at least 11 close relatives of several police officials in southern Kashmir following the detention of father of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo by the police. The abducted relatives were later set free following the release of Naikoo’s father.
