Mumbai:

In 2009, the Bombay High Court ordered the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to remove slums along the main water pipelines in the city and keep a 10-m buffer zone around them. Around 1000 houses were razed to the ground on May 13, 2017. On June 12 of the same year, all the residents were shifted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) to buildings in Mahul.

For the residents, it has but only turned out to be a nightmare. Pollution by oil refineries and chemical factories situated very close to the region has made the Mahul MHADA colony a pollution hub. Inmates are suffering from strange diseases. Occurrence of cancer and TB is high.

Anita Dhole, one of the residents of Mahul MHADA colony speaks about how the government has sent the slum dwellers to a place like Mahul to die and perish over there. Promises made by BJP’s Prakash Mehta have not been kept and the rehabilitation is slowly killing the slum dwellers.
