Unknown gunmen killed two workers of the National Conference (NC) and injured another at Habbakadal area in downtown Srinagar on Friday. According to the locals, some gun-shots were heard at Karfali Mohalla of Habbakadal area. The police have said that militants opened fire on three workers of the National Conference from close range subsequent to which two workers were killed and the other one was injured.
The deceased were identified as Nazir Ahmad Wani,son of Ghulam Mohammad Wani of Kani Kadal and Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Pamposh Colony Noorbagh. The injured NC worker was identified as Shakeel Ahmad Zangoo of Karfali Mohalla and his condition is stable as per reports.
As per sources, the trio were having a conversation near a shop at Karfali Mohalla, when unknown gunmen opened fire on them. Both Wani and Bhat were close aides of MLA Habbakadal, Shameema Firdous while Zangoo was working as block president of NC in Habbakadal area.
Locals allege that both Wani and Bhat were ex-militants and had previously served as commanders of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. Both of them were arrested in this regard and had spent many years in jail. After their release, they joined the National Conference.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Central Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi also confirmed that Wani and Bhat were active in militancy from 1999-2005. He said that it was premature to say which militant outfit was behind their killing.
Meanwhile, National Conference condemned the killing and demanded a high level probe.
