ULB

At least 215 candidates were elected uncontested at the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls after three phases. The filing of nomination papers for the 4th phase of ULB polls ended today. The 4-phase polls for 79 ULBs in the State will be held on October 8, 10, 13 and 16.

“There are 624 wards in Kashmir and at least 150 wards saw no participation. Besides that, 215 candidates from different parties or independents won the elections uncontested due to lack of opponents,” sources said. Meanwhile, none came forward to file nominations in most of the wards in south Kashmir districts including Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama and Kulgam.

The State’s two main political parties including the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had boycotted the elections earlier since they were dissatisfied with the position of the Government of India on Article 35A, which grants special privileges to residents of J&K.

Additionally, smaller parties from Kashmir have also boycotted the polls while the separatists have called for a poll boycott. Militants have also warned contesting candidates of dire consequences if they participate in the elections. Earlier, a video went viral in which Pakistan based Lashkar Toiba threatened candidates who filed their nomination papers for contesting ULB polls.
